9 October - Balkan Marathon Championships

The start of the Balkan Marathon which was held in line with the 33rd edition of Sofia International Marathon on 9 October 2016 was given by European Athletics President Svein Arne Hansen and Balkan Athletics Dobromir Karamarinov. Bulgarian Minister of Youth and Sports Krasen Kralev also attended the event together with the mayor of Sofia Mrs Yordanka Fandakova and the president of the Bulgarian Olympic Committee Stefka Kostadinova.
IAAF President and Senior Vice President Sebastian Coe and Sergey Bubka attended the Congress and were very pleased by the level of organisation and the high operational work of the association.
Balkan Marathon Champions for 2016 are Shaban Mustafa (BUL) and Sladjana Perunovich (MNE).
Bulgarian Saban Mustafa held a tactical race and overtook Turk Hasan Turgut and Serbian Milos Milovanovic with 2:29:59. Turgut brought Turkey silver with 2:32:54, while Milovanovic took the bronze in 2:33:41.
In the women's race Balkan Champion Perunovich (MNE) bested Croatian Nikolina Sustic with 2:49:20 against 2:50:24. The third place was for Radosveta Simeonova (BUL), which started with ambitions for the title, but in the second half of the distance reduced her speed and by a huge effort managed to keep the bronze position finishing with a personal best of 2:56:29.
